Cracking the Code on Tankless Water Heater Ignition Faults: A Recent Navien Service Call
If you live in the Seneca, South Carolina area, you know how popular tankless water heaters have become. They provide endless hot water, save space, and operate with incredible efficiency. At All Hot Water LLC, we install and service a wide variety of these units, and we frequently work with top-tier brands like Navien.
But even the best equipment occasionally runs into hiccups. One of the most common issues homeowners and builders face with tankless systems is the dreaded ignition fault.
Today, we’re going to talk about what causes these faults and share a real-world troubleshooting story from a service call we handled just yesterday.

What is an Ignition Fault? (And the Infamous "Error 003")
An ignition fault simply means your water heater is trying to fire up to heat your water, but something is preventing the flame from catching or staying lit. On a Navien tankless water heater, this is most commonly displayed as an Error Code 003.
When a unit throws a 003 code, it essentially means "Ignition Failure." There are a few common culprits behind this:
Gas Supply Issues: Not enough gas pressure reaching the unit, or an improperly sized gas line.
Dirty Components: A dirty flame rod or igniter that can't sense the flame.
Venting Problems: Blocked intake or exhaust vents disrupting the air-to-fuel ratio.
Air in the Gas Lines: Common in new installations or after running out of propane.
While the manual provides a great starting point for troubleshooting, sometimes it takes years of hands-on experience to pinpoint the actual root cause.
On the Job: Troubleshooting a Navien NPE-240A2
Yesterday, we were called out to look at a Navien NPE-240A2 tankless water heater running on propane.
When we arrived, we spoke with the builder and property owner to get the history of the issue. They explained that the unit would successfully fire up and start running, but it simply wouldn’t stay on. We pulled up the unit's error history and immediately saw that the 003 ignition fault was a recurring nightmare for this heater.
We rolled up our sleeves and started our investigation. First, we evaluated the gas supply and made some necessary adjustments to the gas line. However, the issue persisted.
To make sure we were covering all our bases, we got on the phone with Navien’s technical support team. Because the unit was running on propane, the working theory was that there might be trapped air in the system. Following the manufacturer's guidance, we bled out the tank and the lines to eliminate air as the culprit.
Still, the unit wasn't running perfectly.
When Experience Makes the Difference
This is where textbook troubleshooting ends and on-the-job experience begins. We knew from past service calls that when a unit fires but drops out—and you've ruled out the basic gas supply and air issues—you have to look at how the gas is being managed inside the unit itself.
Relying on our previous experience, we turned our attention to the manifold gas pressure differential.
For a tankless water heater to maintain a steady, reliable flame, the gas pressure differential at the manifold has to be dialed in perfectly. If it's even slightly off, the unit's sensors will shut the flame down as a safety precaution, triggering that frustrating 003 error code.
We hooked up our manometer, tested the pressures, and found exactly what we suspected. We properly adjusted the manifold gas pressure differential to the exact specifications required.
The result? The unit fired up beautifully, maintained a strong, steady flame, and operated exactly as it should. We packed up our tools and returned the heater to full service, leaving behind a very happy builder and property owner.
